Sustainability Strategy

JWL is a proud advocate for green building and sustainable design practices. Our engineering teams follow globally recognized sustainability standards and technical guidelines, alongside all applicable local and federal regulations throughout the design and construction process.

JWL employs certified LEED Engineers who are equipped to meet client sustainability goals by delivering the necessary MEP credits and documentation required for LEED certification and other recognized green building standards.

Our engineers are experienced in integrating energy-efficient, low-impact solutions into projects of all sizes, supporting long-term environmental performance and compliance.

Founded in 2001, James Williams Locke (JWL) has grown into one of the most trusted and experienced MEP and EPC contractors in the United States. With a strong reputation for delivering high-performance, sustainable infrastructure, JWL specializes in the complete lifecycle of building systems—from design and engineering to procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning.

JWL has successfully delivered numerous projects aligned with green building standards such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), WELL Building Standard, and local energy codes. Our experience spans across mission-critical data centers, educational campuses, public institutions, and corporate headquarters.

Some of our notable sustainably certified projects include:

  • GreenCore Data Hub – Silicon Valley, CA: A LEED Gold-certified Tier III facility powered by renewable energy and optimized for high-efficiency cooling systems.
  • StateTech Civic Center – Austin, TX: A government-backed office complex achieving WELL certification for healthy building design and operations.
  • Innovation Learning Center – Boston, MA: A higher education facility combining passive solar design, smart HVAC controls, and advanced energy modeling, certified LEED Silver.

PIXEL building, Melbourne which has achieved LEED Platinum certification achieving 105 points out of 110 points. At the time of project delivery, Pixel achieved the highest LEED certification achieved by any building throughout the world.

STANDARD CHARTERED BANK HQ, New York City – Achieved LEED Gold certification for core and shell construction, and LEED Platinum certification for interior fit-out in 2013.

MASDAR HEADQUARTERS, San Jose, California – Achieved LEED Platinum certification in 2014 for its exemplary performance in energy efficiency, water conservation, and sustainable design.

ONE JWL TOWER, Chicago, Illinois – Achieved LEED Gold Certification in 2015 for its sustainable construction, advanced energy systems, and eco-friendly materials.

MARYVALE MALL, Phoenix, Arizona – Achieved LEED Silver Certification in 2019 for meeting key benchmarks in sustainable site development, water savings, and indoor environmental quality.

BROOKFIELD PLACE TOWER, New York City – Achieved LEED Gold Certification for its high-performance design, energy efficiency, and commitment to sustainable urban development.

Sustainability Initiatives

JWL has implemented the following sustainability initiatives across our projects and offices:

  • Reducing paper use by reusing sheets where appropriate.
  • Recycling all waste paper through certified eco-recycling partners who provide impact reports showing our contribution to environmental sustainability.
  • Refilling and reusing printer cartridges to minimize landfill waste.
  • Turning off lights when not in use (with reminder labels placed above switches).
  • Shutting down computers and electronic equipment at the end of work shifts to conserve energy.
  • Promoting virtual meetings (conference calls, video conferencing, and instant messaging) to reduce travel emissions and fuel costs.
  • Providing all JWL employees with environmental awareness training during onboarding and regular refreshers.
  • Regular updates and communications on sustainable practices and environmental initiatives within the organization.
